MSc Ocean Science, Conservation & Innovation
UN Ocean Conference 2025
The United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) is the most important - global - event dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of the ocean. It serves as a platform for governments, scientists, NGOs, businesses, and civil society to collaborate on solutions to the ocean crisis, with a strong focus on achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water).
The third edition of this conference, UNOC3, will be held in Nice in 2025, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica. This major international event will bring together world leaders and ocean experts to accelerate global commitments, foster innovative solutions, and strengthen cooperation for the future of our seas.
For the MARRES program, UNOC3 represents a unique opportunity to engage with global ocean stakeholders, highlight the importance of interdisciplinary marine science education, and contribute to the dialogue on ocean conservation and sustainable blue economies. Our faculty and students will be actively involved, particularly in initiatives aimed at public engagement and civil society, reinforcing our commitment to making ocean science more accessible and impactful.
Through workshops, outreach events, and collaborative projects, we will showcase the role of education, research, and innovation in addressing marine conservation challenges. UNOC3 is more than a conference—it is a call to action, and MARRES is proud to be part of it.

OUR ROADMAP
SOME MATERIAL
MARREX: THE MARINE EXPLORER
The board consists of a journey around the Ocean with more than 200 questions within 6 themes: mammals, fish, plants, cnidarians & echinoderms, molluscs & crustaceans, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Two levels of difficulty are proposed in parallel so that young and old players can have fun together. The use of dices to advance on the board includes surprise steps to generate a dose of surprise.
NAIA: THE VOICE OF THE OCEAN
We’re using comic books and educational materials to engage a new audience with ocean issues. Naïa’s Journey follows her exciting mission to balance human activities with ocean health. Along the way, she meets inspiring people and learns important lessons—encouraging young readers to care for the environment.
In her first adventure, Panic at Pelagos, Naïa arrives in a small French port located in the heart of the Pelagos Sanctuary. A dolphin is found dead on a beach, entangled in barbed wire. With her friend Octave, a marine biologist, they attempt to solve the mystery behind this tragedy in a region designated for the conservation of cetaceans.
In the following episodes, Naïa and Octave uncover the hidden past of the Mediterranean Sea and how sustainability has long been a challenge for human development.
The current adventures are inspired by interdisciplinary research supported by a prestigious ERC grant, bringing together archaeology, ecology, and numerical modeling from Université Côte d’Azur laboratories. In addition to the comic book, our students develop accompanying educational materials to further engage readers and deepen their understanding.
