Before the doctorate
Doctoral students play a major role in the production of scientific knowledge. By preparing a doctoral thesis, doctoral students are acquiring expertise in a specific field while learning about research. A doctoral degree provides greater opportunities to pursue a career in the public or private sector.
Université Côte d'Azur offers its doctoral students excellent conditions for learning how to conduct research while engaged in research. With more than fifty joint research units and laboratories and close to 1,200 researchers, the university is home to 1,300 doctoral students spread out in six doctoral schools across its campuses in Nice and Sophia-Antipolis. Two hundred and fifty doctoral theses are defended each year in some fifty doctoral tracks.
The doctoral degree is the highest postgraduate degree. It meets the international standards of the doctor philosophia (PhD) degree and provides greater opportunities to pursue a career in the public or private sector.

Under certain conditions, a doctorate can be obtained through the Validation des Acquis de l'Expérience (VAE).
