TEFOR: Territorial FOod System Resilience | Co-construction of scenarios for tomorrow's agriculture Feeding people locally: Challenges and realities for tomorrow's agriculture

The project:

In recent months, shortages of certain foodstuffs have become commonplace: pasta, oil, etc. The current pandemic, climate and geopolitical crises highlight the vulnerability of our food systems to shocks and the need for a transition to resilient, self-sufficient systems. Around Nice, for example, self-sufficiency is a real challenge. So how can we help these areas make the transition to agriculture? What history and what past choices have led us to such circumstances? This is what the TEFOR (TErritorial FOod suystems Resilience) project team is trying to find out. Geographers from the ESPACE laboratory, economists from GREDEG, agronomists from the ISA and experts in collaborative methods from OTECCA are all working towards the same goal: to co-construct scenarios for tomorrow's agriculture. To achieve this, 3 areas are being studied: the Communauté d'Agglomération Sophia Antipolis, the Communauté d'Agglomération Cannes Pays de Lérins and the Communauté d'Agglomération du Pays de Grasse.
The project team, led by Nathalie Lazaric, is proposing to begin by carrying out a territorial analysis to characterise the food systems in place and identify the obstacles and tipping points towards territorial resilience. For example, by integrating discussions around the Territorial Food Plans of the communities concerned, the team was able to gather data and integrate itself into the decision-making of local stakeholders. This data was then modelled and mapped to identify possible actions and options for local stakeholders. Ultimately, the TEFOR project aims to design tools to help public decision-makers and local players in terms of territorial resilience, in particular a 'serious game'. The gamification of this territorial challenge should help to change the trajectories of the stakeholders (local players, farmers, citizens) but also highlight the different possible paths of transition. The dice are cast... and so is the transition!

The +  :

  • A local interdisciplinary project with a strong territorial base
  • Creation of synergies with public authorities (Communauté d'Agglomérations, elected representatives, etc.)

What's next ?

  • The TEFOR project will continue, focusing on the modelling and gamification of the data collected.
  • The European co-funding obtained in 2023 will propel the consortium of researchers to a new level and confirm the innovative nature of the project, which was repaired by Academy 3 in 2022.
