... With Heïdi Sevestre as a guest!

On December 16th, 2024, to mark the end of Université Côte d'Azur's COP29 activities, Academy 3 ‘Space, Environment, Risks and Resilience’ and the International Programme of the Initiative of Excellence organised a morning of discussions with a guest of honour, the glaciologist Heïdi Sevestre, at the Théâtre du Château - Valrose Campus!

After more than a month of mirror actions to COP29, it is by welcoming Heïdi Sevestre that the Université Côte d'Azur closes its action programme for fall 2024. In a talk that was as fascinating as it was alarming, the glaciologist presented the results of her studies on glaciers and their vulnerability to climate change. She emphasised the urgent need to take action against climate change on all scales to the hundred participants who attended the morning's event!

In addition to this first conference, several other interdisciplinary scientific events highlighted the climate emergency through 2 artistic approaches:
  •     The presentation of the photographic work of Olivier Anrigo, from the association Wildflife Interactions, and the exhibition ‘The Arctic: sentinel of climate disruption’.
  •     The presentation of the ‘Néréides’ project by Amal Alnabwany, a Syrian choreographer, dancer and freediver.

Finally, the morning ended with a round table discussion on the theme of climate issues and scientific diplomacy, attended by members of the Université Côte d'Azur delegation to COP29, Saranne Comel, Jean-Christophe Martin and Erwin Franquet, our guest Heïdi Sevestre and 2 PhD students from Université Côte d'Azur: Nawel Belkessa, a PhD student in environmental radiochemistry at the Institut de Chimie de Nice and Abir Khribich, a PhD student in economics at GREDEG. There were some fascinating exchanges between researchers and students on the role of a COP, its capacity to take action and the place of scientists in this organisation!
