Portfolio

The doctoral student's portfolio contains a personal list of all the doctoral student's activities during his or her studies. It recognizes the skills developed during doctoral coursework. It is regularly updated by the doctoral student (art. 15, decree of May 25, 2016).

The portfolio is used for external assessment and recognition during or at the end of the doctorate. It provides concrete evidence of the doctoral student's skills and teaching and research experience.

This is a very useful document for the student’s transition to a professional career. It emphasizes the knowledge acquired by the doctoral student and describes his or her skills with respect to the national Skills Reference Framework for Doctors (below).

Skills Reference Framework for doctoral graduates

The doctorate is included in the French Directory of Professional Certifications.

The award of a doctorate certifies the ability to produce new, high-level scientific knowledge, as well as the acquisition and mastery of skill sets shared by all doctoral graduates and linked to their training based on research.

To encourage employers in the production and service sectors to recruit doctoral graduates, these skill sets are defined in the appendix to the Decree of February 22 2019 that defines the skills of doctoral graduates and includes the doctorate in the French Directory of Professional Certifications.
The different skill sets are the following:

  • Skill set #1: Design and preparation of forward-looking research and development activities and studies
  • Skill set #2: Implementation of forward-looking research and development activities and studies
  • Skill set #3: Transfer and commercialization of the results of forward-looking R&D activities and studies
  • Skill set #4: International science and technology watch
  • Set #5: Teaching and dissemination of scientific and technical culture
  • Set #6: Management of teams dedicated to forward-looking research and development activities and studies
