MASS MOVEMENTS (6 ECTS) Semester 3
MASS MOVEMENTS (6 ECTS) Semester 3

About this module

Mass movement risks range from slow creep processes that progressively deform land surfaces to rock falls or extremely rapid mud flows and landslides that devastate entire towns and neighbourhoods.

This module will examine precursor warning signs, triggering factors and techniques to measure and monitor landslide risks.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  • describe the fundamental processes driving landslides
  • discuss strategies to monitor and mitigate landslides
  • produce slope stability and landslide processes models

Learning approach

This module is project-oriented and includes a mixture of theory and practical work.

Theory: Fundamental Processes, Mitigation Strategies, Early Warning Systems.

Practical work: a case study that uses landslide models to quantify landslide risks and elaborate mitigation strategies.

Topics Covered

  • Landslide fundamentals
  • Landslides and observation
  • Landslides modelling
  • Mitigation and consolidation technics
