about this module
This module covers all the courses taught in the first semester.
In the second and third semesters of the MSc, a wide range of risks will be covered in risk-oriented modules. Before getting into the specificities of each risk, building blocks need to be brought both from the underlying science of the hazards and the methodological approaches that will be taken across the risk modules.
The objective is to bring all students, whatever the background they have, to a common level on fundamental aspects that are necessary for risk evaluation and management.
learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- describe the concept of risk management as studied in the MSc
- define fundamental principles in ecology, ecological risk assessment and heavy metal chemistry
- explain GIS and remote sensing methods
- produce mathematical models using basic mathematical tools
- create model simulations and analyse data using ArcGIS, GIS, Python and R
learning approach
This module consists of seven separate courses. Each course follows a classic format with lectures and tutorials, the latter making intensive use of computers for the methodological fundamentals classes.
Topics covered
- Risk Management Overview
- Environmental Chemistry
- Principles of Ecology
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
