Université Côte d'Azur's ODD 2

Ensuring food security and nutrition for all, especially the most vulnerable, is at the heart of SDG 2 (Sustainable Development Goal). The Mediterranean region, characterized by millennia-old agriculture and exceptional biodiversity, is facing major challenges linked to climate change, the growing scarcity of water resources and changing consumption patterns. Université Côte d'Azur, as a major player in research and higher education in the region, is particularly well placed to provide innovative responses to these challenges. From agricultural production to responsible consumption, via the valorization of local products, discover the different facets of ODD 2, highlighting the university's contributions to the construction of sustainable and resilient food systems.

What is ODD 2? Better understanding

MDG 2 aims to eliminate hunger and ensure food security for all. This goal goes far beyond simply producing enough food. It's about ensuring that everyone has access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food all year round. SDG 2 also encourages sustainable agricultural practices that conserve natural resources and adapt to climate change. By focusing on improving agricultural productivity, strengthening the resilience of food systems and promoting healthy diets, SDG 2 aims to create a world where no one goes hungry, and where food resources are used equitably and sustainably.

Institutional commitment to ODD 2

Université Côte d'Azur is implementing a number of initiatives to combat hunger, in line with MDG 2 "Zero Hunger".

It produces a significant amount of research in connection with farm-to-plate policy and, more broadly, agro-ecology, with a high proportion of publications in high-impact journals, contributing to innovative solutions and lines of thought.

In addition, at campus level, programs have been set up to ensure that students have access to healthy, affordable food, including food banks, and to reduce waste.

Finally, the university supports sustainable agriculture and food by providing training and organizing knowledge-sharing events.

Dedicated structures

  • Institut Sophia Agrobiotech: ISA, an international research institute funded by INRAE, Université Côte d'Azur and CNRS. Its main research themes concern the study of interactions between plants, pests and symbionts, and their dynamics in time and space. To achieve this, the Institute brings together strong skills in comparative, evolutionary and functional genomics, community ecology and agronomy.
  • Academy 4: Academy 4 of the Université Côte d'Azur is dedicated to pedagogical innovation and the improvement of teaching practices. It supports teachers in developing active and inclusive learning methods. The academy organizes workshops, conferences and teaching resources to encourage the exchange of best practices and innovation in higher education.
  • The Engagement Center: The mission of the Université Côte d'Azur's Engagement Center is to promote civic engagement and volunteer work among students. It facilitates access to engagement opportunities, encourages community projects and supports initiatives aimed at strengthening the link between the university and society. The center also organizes events and training to raise awareness among students of the importance of their role in the community.
  • AGORAé: AGORAé is a food support service for students, operated by FACE 06 with the support of the Université Côte d'Azur. The service offers food baskets at reduced prices, as well as awareness-raising campaigns on student poverty. AGORAé aims to combat food insecurity and improve living conditions for students on campus. It is one of the solutions offered by the university and its partners to help students cope with the high cost of living.
  • OTECCA: The Observatoire de la Transition Écologique et Citoyenne Côte d'Azur (OTECCA) is an interface between the academic world and societal players to promote the ecological transition in the Alpes-Maritimes region. It carries out Participatory Action Research (PAR) projects and acts both as a territorial Observatory to collect data and as a "Science Boutique" to support local initiatives. OTECCA, founded in 2018, promotes the values of sharing, impact and respect, using collective intelligence tools to co-construct projects with various stakeholders. Officially recognized in 2021, it is organized around a Scientific Council and a Steering Committee.
