Université Côte d'Azur's ODD 14
SDG 14 (Sustainable Development Goal) aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. Located on the Mediterranean coast, the Côte d'Azur boasts an exceptionally rich natural marine heritage. Université Côte d'Azur, aware of the importance of preserving this fragile ecosystem, is carrying out a number of research projects and actions to better understand and protect underwater life. This article explores the different facets of ODD 14 and highlights the university's contributions to protecting our seabed.
What is ODD 14? A better understanding
SDG 14, or Sustainable Development Goal 14, aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. It is a call to protect and enhance these vital ecosystems for our planet. SDG 14 focuses on reducing marine pollution, combating overfishing, protecting marine protected areas and promoting scientific research on the oceans. This goal recognizes the importance of the oceans for climate, biodiversity and the global economy. It aims to ensure that future generations can continue to benefit from the resources and services that the oceans provide.
Institutional commitment to ODD 14
As Nice prepares to host the UNOC in June 2025, marine resources are one of the major challenges facing the Université Côte d'Azur and its partners. To this end, the IFR Ressources Marines (Marine Resources Research Institute) is conducting a major interdisciplinary research project... Training courses, conferences and workshops are organized for students, scientists and the general public to inform them about marine ecosystems and the issues involved in exploiting them (fishing, tourism, culture, pollution, etc.).
With this in mind, the University is implementing a number of initiatives, such as promoting the sustainable use of aquatic resources. Finally, the links forged between research and industry are helping to preserve aquatic ecosystems, with the growing use of cutting-edge technologies.
Faced with the scourge of marine pollution affecting the Mediterranean in particular, the Université Côte d'Azur has implemented measures to limit its impact on pollution, particularly plastic pollution, and the over-consumption of aquatic resources.
Anchored in an exceptional ecosystem, the Université Côte d'Azur and its partners are as involved as possible in preserving the richness of local ecosystems. Numerous initiatives are undertaken to monitor water quality, and constantly measure a number of indicators of the health of local ecosystems.
Structures dedicated to ODD 14
Academy 3: Space, Environment, Risk and Resilience.
Community: 300 researchers in 17 research laboratories. The future of our planet is one of today's greatest concerns. Many factors, both natural and man-made, are currently threatening our environment, our societies, our planet and even space. The main objectives of Academy 3 are to explore these natural and man-made hazards and risks. This involves understanding the processes, diversity, interconnections and socio-environmental impacts of these hazards and risks, to help develop actions that guarantee the sustainable well-being of our societies, our environment and our planet.
IFR MARRES: The Institut Fédératif de Recherche (IFR) Ressources Marines (MARRES) is a dynamic, trans-disciplinary research structure of the Université Côte d'Azur that brings together players working in the field of marine resources. IFR MARRES aims to structure research between the various disciplines in this field within Université Côte d'Azur. This objective is articulated around the global missions and activities of research, conservation, innovation, education and scientific culture carried out by the member research units with and for society and the marine environment. 9 Research Units - 120 Scientists - 5 Training Courses - 7 EUR - 5 Academies
Life and Health Sciences University Research School (LIFE): The EUR brings together over 1,000 scientists in 82 teams at nine research centers. It collaborates with national agencies such as CNRS and INSERM, and focuses on major challenges in life sciences, including genomics, biomedical research and environmental biology.
EUR LIFE aims to create synergies between research, teaching and employment, train students in interdisciplinarity, and foster innovation and entrepreneurship.
ODYSSEE: The École Universitaire de Recherche Société & Environnement, also known as EUR ODYSSEE (Origines et Dynamiques en Sciences de la Société Et de l'Environnement), takes a multidisciplinary approach to linking social and environmental sciences. Its aim is to develop new knowledge and methods by examining human, social and environmental issues as an interconnected reality. EUR aims to innovate by offering integrated training courses, supported by research teams, NGOs and socio-economic players. Faced with the growing needs of governments, local authorities and businesses, it trains future experts capable of tackling social and environmental issues in a holistic way. The disciplines covered by EUR include sociology, ethnology, anthropology, archaeology, history, geography, psychology, ecology, information and communication, political science, as well as international and European law.
